Douglas Fisk
Douglas Fisk is active as a composer, pianist, and teacher. His music has been performed by conductor Darrell Ang; members of the New York New Music Ensemble; percussionists Gwendolyn Dease, Ayano Kataoka, and Ian David Rosenbaum; baritones Malcolm Merriweather and Vince B. Vincent; flutists Daniel Alexander, Gina Izzo, and Conor Nelson; violinists Ye-jin Han and Calvin Wiersma; bassist Eleonore Oppenheim; Sospiro Winds, Washington Square Winds, and Immer Neu. He studied composition with Paul Barsom, Bruce Trinkley, Ezra Laderman, and Martin Bresnick. He received his MM and MMA degrees from the Yale School of Music.
He was an Associate Artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 2020, where we worked with Jennifer Higdon. He has attended the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, the June in Buffalo festival, the European American Musical Alliance program in Paris, France, where he studied with Claude Baker, and been in residence at the Millay Colony for the Arts. He’s presented his music in masterclasses with Narcis Bonet, David Felder, Joel Hoffman, Bernard Rands, Augusta Reed Thomas, and Charles Wuorinen.
He has received grants/commissions from Michigan State University,
the Urbana, Illinois Public Arts Commission, and the Queens (NY) Council on the Arts.
As a pianist, he has studied with Jane Heintzelman, Marcantonio Barone, Timothy Shafer, Cecilia Dunoyer, Steven Smith, and Hanchien Lee.
He has taught music theory classes at the Yale Department of Music, the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, and the Long Island Conservatory of Music.
Recent composition recognitions include selection by the Locrian Chamber Players for performance of his work during the 2020 concert season, selection into the Chicago Ensemble’s Discover America IX concert series, selection and performance by the One Ounce Opera: Fresh Squeezed Ounce of Art Song concert, inclusion in the NewMusicShelf anthology for new art song (mezzo-soprano), and a 2019 New Works Grant from the Queens, NY Council on the Arts.
